Loropetalum is an evergreen shrub or small tree up to 3 m tall, branches velvet-hairy. Leaves are ovate, elliptic to obovate, up to 6 cm long, often tinged purple, densely velvet-hairy, margin entire, lateral veins 4-8 on each side. Flowers are red, borne in a dense up to 16 flowered raceme, on up to 1 cm long peduncle.The leaves are small and oval. While some loropetalum plants do have green foliage, it is most commonly found with lovely burgundy foliage that contrasts nicely with other plants. Loropetalum can grow 6 to 15 feet tall, but is usually pruned as a shrub. With its moderate growth rate, it works well as a screening plant, hedge, or border. It's often used as an accent plant for its beautiful floral display.
